What proof do I need to obtain a marriage license?

A person is required to establish proof of identity and age (persons who are or appear to be under the age of eighteen only) by submitting to the issuing clerk one of the following identity related documents:

  • Valid driver's license (from the United States or any of its territories)
  • Valid non-driver's identification card issued by the department of motor vehicles (from the United States or any of its territories)
  • Valid learner's permit from New York State only
  • Passport
  • Active military identification card
  • Valid United States alien registration card
  • U.S. certificate of naturalization ( issued within the past ten years)
  • Employment authorization card issued by the Bureau of Immigration and Customs of the Department of Homeland Security

    And, if applicable, one of the following age related documents:

  • Birth Certificate
  • Census record
  • Baptismal record
  • Passport
  • Valid driver's license (from the United States or any of its territories)
  • Life insurance pliicy
  • Scholi record
  • Immigration record
  • Naturalization record
  • Court record

    There is no residence or citizenship status requirement.
